At Impressio, we believe that the right understanding and technological edge can lead companies towards a successful future. Our story began with biomedical applications, and from our customers' feedback, we quickly found novel applications in sports, military, automotive, and aerospace.

 

OUR TECHNOLOGY

Advanced Materials for Advanced Helmets

The key to developing a successful technology is not to only focus on a single area of innovation (i.e. materials), but to also focus on design and manufacturing of a system that is optimized for an application such as football helmets. Our approach has the potential to be used for any helmet technology to improve safety.  Protective helmets have evolved from leather caps to their current form due to the materials innovation boom in plastics during the middle of the last century; however, no new energy-absorbing materials have been introduced into helmets over the previous 50 years. As a result, helmet manufacturers are actively seeking novel solutions to helmet designs to improve player safety. Without using novel materials or advanced manufacturing techniques, improvements to helmet safety will remain incremental.

PRESIDENT, CEO, CTO

CHRIS RECEIVED HIS PH.D. IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO BOULDER IN 2007. DURING HIS GRADUATE STUDIES, HE HELPED CO-FOUND MEDSHAPE INC. - A UNIVERSITY-BASED STARTUP FOCUSED ON DEVELOPING NOVEL SHAPE-MEMORY DEVICES. CHRIS WORKED AS THE PRINCIPAL SCIENTIST AT MEDSHAPE FROM 2007-2011, DURING WHICH TIME HE HELPED CLEAR THE FIRST SHAPE-MEMORY POLYMER DEVICES THROUGH THE USFDA. THIS INCLUDES THE MORPHIX SUTURE ANCHOR AND EXOSHAPE ANTERIOR CRUCIATE LIGAMENT (ACL) FIXATION DEVICE. HE RETURNED TO ACADEMIA IN 2012 AND JOINED THE FACULTY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO DENVER. HE RECEIVED THE PRESTIGIOUS NSF CAREER AWARD TO INVESTIGATE LIQUID-CRYSTAL ELASTOMERS FOR BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS. HE HAS PUBLISHED OVER 40 PEER-REVIEWED PUBLICATIONS AND RAISED OVER $2M IN FEDERALLY FUNDED RESEARCH. CHRIS IS DEDICATED TO ONCE AGAIN TRANSLATING HIS RESEARCH FROM THE UNIVERSITY INTO THE MARKETPLACE WITH IMPRESSIO.

MIKE STEVENS

DIRECTOR

MR. STEVENS HAS THREE DECADES OF EXTRAORDINARY SUCCESS IN A SERIES OF LEADERSHIP ROLES AT TOP TIER COMPANIES THAT INCLUDES THE NEW YORK FOOTBALL GIANTS, THE WASHINGTON REDSKINS, EBAY AND THE NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION. HIS BRAND AND BUSINESS BUILDING EXPERIENCE INCLUDE LEADING REVENUE GENERATION, STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AND GROWING MEDIA BUSINESSES AT A GLOBAL LEVEL AND LOCAL MARKET SCALE. MR. STEVENS CURRENTLY SERVES AS MANAGING PARTNER OF MS2 VENTURES LLC, AN ADVISORY AND INVESTMENT FIRM. HE ALSO SERVES AS A CLASS I DIRECTOR OF LANDCADIA HOLDINGS II (NASDAQ: LCAHU), CHAIR OF THE COMPENSATION COMMITTEE AND MEMBER OF THE AUDIT COMMITTEE.

J. KURT JACOBUS, PH.D.

DIRECTOR, OPERATIONS

KURT RECEIVED HIS PHD IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT URBANA-CHAMPAIGN.  AFTER GRADUATION, HE JOINED MCKINSEY AND COMPANY AS A CONSULTANT SPECIALIZING IN THE CREATION AND GROWTH OF EARLY STAGE TECHNOLOGY BUSINESSES FOR LARGE AND SMALLER CLIENTS.  FOLLOWING MCKINSEY, KURT HAS BUILT HIS CAREER AT THE INTERSECTION OF NEW MATERIALS TECHNOLOGIES AND HEALTHCARE TO IMPROVE HUMAN HEALTH.  HE HAS SERVED AS A FOUNDER, OPERATOR, INVESTOR AND ADVISOR TO NEARLY 20 COMPANIES OVER THE PAST DECADE, LEADING TO THE COMMERCIALIZATION OF MULTIPLE NEW MATERIAL TECHNOLOGIES, THE CREATION OF MANY BREAKTHROUGH PRODUCTS AND STRONG SHAREHOLDER RETURNS.  AT PRESENT HE IS CEO OF MEDSHAPE, INC., A FOOT AND ANKLE ORTHOPEDIC IMPLANT COMPANY WITH A MARKET-LEADING PRODUCT TO ELIMINATE LIMB AMPUTATION.  KURT IS A FOUNDER AND BOARD MEMBER OF IMPRESSIO.

CARL FRICK, PH.D.

DIRECTOR, RESEARCH

CARL IS THE  MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT HEAD AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING. HE RECEIVED HIS PH.D. FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO BOULDER IN 2005. BEFORE JOINING THE ACADEMIA, HE WORKED AS A SENIOR ENGINEER AT ABBOTT VASCULAR. CARL  IS A WORLD-RENOWNED RESEARCHER IN SHAPE-MEMORY  MATERIALS AND MATERIALS CHARACTERIZATION. HE IS A RECIPIENT OF THE NSF CAREER AWARD FOR REVERSIBLE NANO-MECHANICAL ACTUATION IN NITINOL ALLOYS AND HAS 40 PEER-REVIEWED PUBLICATIONS.

AMIR TORBATI, PH.D.

MANAGER, RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

AMIR RECEIVED HIS PH.D. IN BIOENGINEERING FROM SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY IN 2014 UNDER PROF. PATRICK MATHER. HIS WORK INVESTIGATED THE SYNTHESIS OF LIQUID-CRYSTAL ELASTOMERS AND HYDROGELS. HE JOINED THE SMART MATERIALS AND BIOMECHANICS (SMAB) LAB AT THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO DENVER AS A POSTDOCTORAL SCIENTIST AND HAS BEEN WORKING AS AN ADJUNCT PROFESSOR IN THE DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING SINCE 2016. AMIR RECEIVED AN NSF I-CORPS AWARD TO INVESTIGATE USING LIQUID-CRYSTAL ELASTOMERS FOR BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS IN DECEMBER 2016.

LILLIAN CHATHAM

IMPACT TESTING ENGINEER

LILLIAN IS A FORENSIC ENGINEER WHO CONSULTS AND TESTIFIES AS AN EXPERT WITNESS IN THE AREA OF BIOMECHANICS. HER EXPERTISE IN HEAD INJURY CRITERIA AND THRESHOLD IS THE OVERLAP THAT COMPLIMENTS THE WORK AT IMPRESSIO LEADING HELMET IMPACT TESTING. LILLIAN RECEIVED HER BACHELOR'S AND MASTER'S DEGREE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO DENVER IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING UNDER THE ESTEEMED DANA CARPENTER. HER STUDIES FOCUSED ON BIOMECHANICS DUE TO HER PASSION FOR BEING IN A FIELD THAT IMPROVES THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF OTHERS.  HER RESEARCH EVALUATED THE INTERVERTEBRAL STRESSES THROUGH FINITE ELEMENT MODELING OF LUMBAR INTERBODY FUSION FOR OPTIMIZATION OF THE IMPLANT MATERIAL AND SHAPE. THIS PASSION LED HER TO WORK FOR A START-UP MEDICAL COMPANY THAT DEVELOPED PATIENT-SPECIFIC GUIDES FOR SPINAL SURGERY PRIOR TO HER BECOMING A CONSULTING ENGINEER.

RICHARD WOJCIK

MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER

RICH IS A MECHANICAL ENGINEER AND PROUD UNITED STATES AIR FORCE VETERAN WHO SPECIALIZES IN NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT FROM CONCEPT TO COMMERCIALIZATION. HIS EXPERIENCE INCLUDES MEDICAL DEVICE DEVELOPMENT, DEVELOPING TEST METHODS AND FIXTURING, AND TIGHT TOLERANCE PROTOTYPING WITH 3D PRINTERS AND TRADITIONAL CNC MACHINE EQUIPMENT. RICH RECEIVED BOTH HIS BACHELOR’S AND MASTER’S DEGREES FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO DENVER IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING WITH EMPHASIS IN BIOMECHANICS. HIS PASSION FOR IMPROVING LIVES AND ACADEMIC INTERESTS LED HIM TO WORK FOR A START-UP MEDICAL DEVICE COMPANY CALLED JORTEK SURGICAL. WORKING DIRECTLY WITH JORTEK CEO, KELLY AMMANN, RICH ASSISTED IN DEVELOPING A GROUND-BREAKING ACL INTERFERENCE SCREW. RICH ALSO INDEPENDENTLY DEVELOPED A SUCCESSFUL STEREOTACTIC HEAD FRAME ADAPTER FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF NEUROSURGERY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO HOSPITAL. MOST RECENTLY, RICH HAS DEVELOPED ORTHOPEDIC SURGICAL DEVICES FOR STRYKER SPORTS MEDICINE.

ADAM BOSCO

MECHANICAL ENGINEER

ADAM'S PAST RESEARCH AND EXPERIENCE HAVE BEEN IN NOVEL MATERIALS, SPECIFICALLY MAKING BIODEGRADABLE PLASTIC FROM RECYCLED PLANT MATTER.  THE RESEARCH WAS DONE AS HIS SENIOR DESIGN PROJECT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA.  HIS INTEREST IN SPORTS LED HIM TO PURSUE HIS MASTER’S DEGREE IN SPORTS ENGINEERING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO DENVER. ADAM'S MASTER'S PROJECT HAS INCORPORATED DESIGNING AND TESTING A PROTOTYPE HOCKEY GOALIE HELMET THAT WILL IDEALLY PERFORM BETTER THAN CURRENT MODELS ON THE MARKET. ADAM HAS BEEN MAINLY FOCUSING ON DEVELOPING A 3D PRINTED PAD THAT CAN REPLACE THE FOAMS THAT ARE CURRENTLY IN HELMETS.  HE HAS HELPED DESIGN, MODEL, AND TEST NEW LATTICE ORIENTATIONS IN HELMETS THAT RANGE OVER MULTIPLE DIFFERENT SPORTS.

SAM MILLS

COMPUTATIONAL MODELING EXPERT

SAM'S PAST RESEARCH AND EXPERIENCE HAS INVOLVED SPINE IMPLANTS AND SPINAL SURGERY. VOLUNTEERING IN THE EXPERIMENTAL JOINT AND BIOMECHANICS RESEARCH LAB AT THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS HELPED TP DEVELOP HIS PASSION FOR BIOMECHANICS WHICH LED HIM TO THE SMART MATERIALS AND BIOMECHANICS LAB. SAM'S MASTER’S THESIS AND RELEVANT PUBLICATIONS LEVERAGED MEDICAL IMAGING AND FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS (FEA) IN ORDER TO DETERMINE AND COMPARE THE STRENGTH OF BONES INCLUDING BONE DAGGERS. AFTER COMPLETING HIS MASTER’S DEGREE, HE BEGAN PURSUING A PHD FOCUSING ON FEA OF STANDARD NFL HELMETS USING LS-DYNA. RECENTLY, HE SUBMITTED A PAPER ON STUDYING THE “EFFECT OF FOAM DENSIFICATION AND IMPACT VELOCITY ON THE PERFORMANCE OF AN NFL HELMET USING COMPUTATIONAL MODELING”. THIS WORK WAS ACCOMPLISHED BY USING THE HELMET MODELS THAT THE NFL RELEASED FOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT. THIS ALSO LED TO TEACHING COURSES IN ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING, COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN, AND A ROLE AS THE ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO DENVER. CURRENTLY, AS A PH.D. CANDIDATE, SAM IS FOCUSING ON DESIGNING, MODELING, TESTING, AND PRINTING OF LATTICE STRUCTURES FOR ENERGY ABSORPTION.
